The Esplanade, Theatres on the Bay
A new large-scale theater space is being planned for Singapore's Civic District. This highly anticipated project, named The Esplanade: Theatres on the Bay, will become a new cultural landmark for Singapore, which is well known for its multi-cultural history and diverse.

The design, which is based on the concept of people living in harmony with nature, blending the life of the city with the tranquillity of water, and reflecting the balance of yin and yang, will be one of the most unique and complex structures created in recent history.

The Esplanade, Theatres on the Bay will be among the first of a generation of new arts centres in Asia ushering in the new Asian renaissance. With it's completion scheduled in 2001, it will welcome all artists and audiences from all over the world, and also spotlight Singapore at the crossroad of cultures and ideas.

In two large performing halls, equipped with special acoustically sensitive features, events will be hosted - such as concerts, musicals and traditional dramas. Smaller performance spaces, offices and retail stores will surround the facility. The Concert Hall and the Lyric Theatre will be built to meet international standards, the other spaces will ensure that even the smaller performing arts group can gain access to the centre. The Esplanade aims to not only cater to the existing arts community but will also encourage many more Singaporeans to take up an active interest in the arts.

Let us now view The Esplanade as it is taking shape.
